Timeline of the City of Coconut Creek

1967 The City of Coconut Creek was incorporated February 21.
1970 The City’s first school, Coconut Creek Elementary, opened in February.
City Census: 1,359 residents
1971 The City’s Charter was adopted on November 2, and the police department was created.
1972 Coconut Creek High School opened in January.
The Volunteer Fire Department was created.
1973 The Coconut Creek Community Center was completed.
1980 City Census: 6,288 residents
1982 The Coconut Creek Public Safety Department was established by the City’s Charter, and the phase out of volunteer firefighters commenced.
1983 Coconut Creek Plaza, the first major shopping area in the City, was completed.
1986 Government Center opened December 18.
1987 Lyons Road widening commenced.
The City’s 20th anniversary was celebrated November 21 at Tradewinds Park South.
1988 Butterfly World at Tradewinds Park South opened in March.
Tree City USA designation awarded at the City’s first Arbor Day on April 29.
Ted Thomas Activity Center was dedicated July 29.
1989 Veterans Park dedicated November 11.
1990 Winston Park Nature Center dedicated February 17.
Winston Park Elementary opened August.
City Census: 27,485 residents
1992 The City’s 25th anniversary celebration kick-off was held February 20.
Cocoplum Park opened May 2.
Windmill Park opened May 9.
SOS Children’s Village opened in November.
1993 The City’s year-long 25th anniversary grand finale was held January 23.
Public Safety North Substation dedicated February 26.
Bus Shuttle Service commenced operation September 13.
First Holiday Fantasy of Lights opened at Tradewinds Park on November 25.
1994 Recreation Complex opened March 19.
North Broward Regional Library at Broward Community College opened June 13.
1995 The Sports Wall of Fame at the Recreation Complex was dedicated June 13.
1996 Tradewinds Elementary School opened in August.
1997 Cocoplum Park rededicated as George S. Gerber Memorial Park on March 18.
The City’s 30th anniversary was celebrated November 8 at Tradewinds Park South.
1998 Community Center rededicated as Rowe Community Center on April 19.
1999 City’s Municipal Service Provider Agreement with Seminole Tribe of Florida approved August 16.
Lakeside Park dedicated September 24.
Fire and Emergency Medical Services contract with the City of Margate approved November 23, with provision of Fire Services commencing December 1.
2000 Coconut Creek Casino opened February 7.
Lyons Creek Middle School opened August 28.
Emergency Medical Services provided by the City of Margate commencing October 1. Public Safety again became the Police Department.
City Census: 45,517 residents
2001 Sabal Pines Park dedicated January 13.
2002 35th Anniversary Celebration - February 16 rescheduled to April 27 due to inclement weather.
2005 Coconut Creek Community Center opens at Lyons and Coconut Creek Parkway.
