Community Wildlife Habitat Certification
The City of Coconut Creek has become the first city in Florida to be certified as a Community Wildlife Habitat (CWH) through the National Wildlife Federation!! All of our efforts have paid off and thanks go out to all the residents who helped and certified their yards. The CWH project has instilled a wonderful sense of pride and community throughout Coconut Creek. It has also resulted in the creation and enhancement of many environmentally friendly landscapes in our city. Congratulations everyone! We are planning a city-wide event to celebrate our certification. We’ll keep you posted on this web site.
Moving Forward
Now that we are “Certified” don’t think that we will stop what we have begun. We are going to continue the programs we started and we still encourage everyone to try and certify their homes as Backyard Wildlife Habitats. Each year we are required to submit an update report to the NWF. In order to stay certified we must obtain a certain number of points through a variety of activities. Let’s continue to make Coconut Creek an even better city. Remember, if you do get your yard certified, the city will reimburse your $15 NWF application fee. Just bring in proof of certification to City Hall. Click on the link below to get more information on the backyard wildlife habitat program.
Wildlife Gardening Series
Our third event is being scheduled in our Wildlife Gardening Series. We are planning a “ Butterfly Gardens of City Hall” tour sometime in the very near future. If you are interested please email Todd Henry-DeJesus at tdejesus@creekgov.net to let him know what days/times you might be able to attend. We will be filling spots for the tours on a first come first serve basis so contact us as soon as possible to guarantee a space. We will try to work around everyone’s schedules.
Coconut Creek School Education Series
This past year we partnered with the Kids Ecology Corps and talked to over 700 students at Lyons Creek Middle School and Coconut Creek Elementary School. Both schools did an amazing job with their new butterfly gardens. This coming fall we are planning to start a nursery at Winston Park Elementary. The goal is to have the students care for the plants and eventually help create their first butterfly garden. If you have students at that school and want to either help out or donate time, plants, birdbaths, arbors, etc. please let us know!
